7/20/22 Journal: Progress on the Book

pile of books

As I’ve said one jillion times, I’m publishing a book sometime in 2022. It’s mostly a collection of the best humor essays I’ve written over the last seventeen years. My wife made it sound easy. “Just copy and paste them into Amazon, hit ‘Publish’, and you’re done! What are you waiting for?”

Apparently, my wife isn’t as absolutely obsessed with perfection as I am. She plows forward, makes her mistakes, fixes them, and gets shit done. I’m glad my daughters have her around to watch as they grow up. I can’t see how they won’t grow up to be astronauts or CEOs. At the very worst, a U.S. President. (God, who wants that job?)

Me, I get “paralysis by analysis”.

I recently sent an essay to Angie, a good friend of mine whom I trust has impeccable editing skills. She emailed me back last night and gave me an ‘attaboy’ on all of the grammar and style, but mentioned that the piece is written in the present tense, as if I still live in New York City and it’s still 2015. I tend to write in present tense, since, well, I’m a blogger. That’s what we all do.

Ahh…but I don’t want to be a blogger, I want to be a writer. An essayist. A writes-shit-correctly-ist. But I also don’t want to rewrite all those damn essays. I just want to copy and paste the things into the Amazon thingamajig and hit a button and books spew out. Done! Let’s go to the next book!

I asked Evi what she thought, telling her I don’t want to edit my old shit because it’ll take so much time.

“The time will pass anyway,” she said. If it takes six months, take six months. Do it right.”

Angie suggested that I could, instead, write an introduction to every section explaining where I was in life, and allow them to read it just the way it is, as a journal entry. I may do that out of pure laziness, but I have a feeling…

Goddammit I have a feeling I’m going to rewrite every damn thing.

Sorry this post is so late. Today really got away from me.
